Rochester, NY – On Monday, July 27th, 2020, Monroe County Legislator Sabrina LaMar held a press conference announcing that she was filing a formal ethics complaint against Congressman Joseph Morelle. The complaint alleges that Congressman Morelle improperly used his position to threaten the employment of County Legislator LaMar at RIT because she appeared in an interview with his primary opponent. RIT receives significant funding from the Federal government.
Section 14 of the Official Code of Ethics for the 116th Congress, states:
“A member may not with the intent to influence an employment decision or employment practice of any private entity. The member cannot take or withhold, or offer or threaten to take or withhold, an official act. The member can not influence, or offer or threaten to influence, the official act of another.”
“The ethics complaint against Congressman Morelle is very concerning.” said Kevin Wilson, Libertarian Candidate for Congress. “Voters in the 25th Congressional District are tired of politics as usual; they deserve a representative who won’t use their position to threaten someone’s employment for appearing on Facebook live with a rival. If Congressman Morelle abused his position as the complaint alleges, he should resign. If he won’t, voters have another choice at the ballot box this November.”
Democratic Mayor of Rochester Lovely Warren joined County Legislator LaMar in calling for Congressman Morelle’s resignation.
